Description |
Model of Light of Freedom water feature design for World War II Memorial (UNBUILT). |
Context |
Kaskey's work for Washington, D.C.'s U.S. National World War II Memorial began in the 1990s when architect Friedrich St. Florian asked him to join in designing the project. This series of material illustrates part of the process that Kaskey Studio went through in preparing for the World War II Memorial. Seen here are examples of the research materials copied at the National Archives and Records Administration and other photo repositories; drawings, tracings, and sketches of different ideas for each panel; and maquettes, or scale models, depicting several details throughout the Memorial. The Memorial, dedicated in 2004, features baldacchinos-architectural canopies-designed by Kaskey, as well as wreaths, ribbons, ropes, and other non-figurative details. |
