Proposed fountain celebrating the Anacostia River (UNBUILT) |
Context |
Raymond Kaskey was approached by architect Davis Buckley to design a fountain celebrating the Anacostia River. Intended for the Southwest waterfront near Nationals Park, this fountain would have been located in a plaza within the rapidly-developing neighborhood. The pool's irregular shape mimics the geographic outline of the Anacostia watershed, and the beavers, herons, box turtles, and lotus that happily coexist in this design represent the renewal of an area long-plagued by pollution. The urban plot of land intended for the plaza unexpectedly changed hands, and Kaskey's fountain remains without at home, for now. |
