Context |
National Law Enforcement Memorial Lions Raymond Kaskey The National Law Enforcement Memorial, located right outside the Museum, above the Judiciary Square Metro station, features sculptures of lions and a wall bearing the names of fallen officers. The adult lions, symbols of guardianship, watch over the innocent cubs, which were modeled by George Carr, just as the law enforcement personnel remembered at this site once watched over the public they served. Kaskey studied the form of lions at the National Zoo, but because they move around while being sketched, he was better helped by lion statues around Washington, D.C., including those on the Taft Bridge over Rock Creek Park at Connecticut Avenue. To create these maquettes, Kaskey studied live lions at the National Zoo, as well as existing lion sculptures on the nearby Taft Bridge over Rock Creek Park. One model is partially "dissected"-right down to the skeleton-and emblematic of his dedication to capturing the true form of the animal. The completed lion statues are across the street from the National Building Museum at the National Law Enforcement Memorial. Standing guard over baby cubs, the adult lions represent police officers who have given their lives to protect the public. The lion has a diverse iconographic history, used here for embodying courage, justice, and strength. |
