Context |
Kaskey's work for Washington, D.C.'s U.S. National World War II Memorial began in the 1990s when architect Friedrich St. Florian asked him to join in designing the project. The Memorial, dedicated in 2004, features baldacchinos-architectural canopies-designed by Kaskey, as well as wreaths, ribbons, ropes, and other non-figurative details. Kaskey also designed a series of 24 bas-relief panels depicting the lives of Americans during the War, in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. In contrast to the allegorical work throughout the Memorial, these scenes show real men and women at home and overseas, and are based on extensive research into the experiences of varied groups during the conflict. This series of material illustrates part of the process that Kaskey Studio went through in preparing for the World War II Memorial. Seen here are examples of the research materials copied at the National Archives and Records Administration and other photo repositories; drawings, tracings, and sketches of different ideas for each panel; and maquettes, or scale models, depicting several details throughout the Memorial. |
