Scale maquette of fountain top for Queen Charlotte, Charlotte Airport. Two part macquette for the top of the pillar holding the Queen Charlotte statue. Features four faces that spit water down to the fountain below. The city of Charlotte, North Carolina, is named for Queen Charlotte, who ruled over the United Kingdom with her husband King George III at the time the town was founded in the 1760s. Queen Charlotte was known as a patron of the arts and of music in particular. Kaskey designed this bronze statue-which stands 15 feet high in the completed version-to stand guard outside Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. To connect this 18th-century royal with the theme of air travel, Kaskey designed Charlotte to look as if she is being supported by the wind, like an airplane. Dedicated in 1990, the statue was recently relocated during renovations and now sits between two parking garages. 1988-90- Fountain and figure of Queen Charlotte for the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, Charlotte, NC. Bronze figure, 16 ft. high. |
