Description |
Yellow resin maquette of eagle design for World War II Memorial Baldacchino |
Context |
Raymond Kaskey collaborated with architect Friedrich St. Florian on Washington, D.C.'s World War II Memorial in the 1990s. Opened in 2004, the Memorial incorporates numerous elements created by Kaskey, including these eagle-adorned architectural canopies, called baldacchinos. This group of maquettes illustrates his iterative design process which involves models that vary in scale and level of detail. Voted by Congress to grace the nation's official seal in 1782, the bald eagle is a ubiquitous emblem of the United States, symbolizing strength, freedom, and independence. |
