Context |
The Harold Washington Public Library in Chicago includes several sculptural pieces. The library was completed in 1991; the the rooftop ornament was completed one year later. The painted metalwork pieces on the roof of the building, called acroteria, were designed by Kent Bloomer. The owls, designed by Kaskey, were included to symbolize wisdom and the gathering of knowledge. Kaskey also designed wall medallions featuring the face of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, accompanied by ears of corn. The sculpture reads "In Urbs Horto," or, City in a Garden, symbolizing the city of Chicago's great plains heritage. |
